Is 20% tint legal in Ohio?
Short answer: 20% tint is not legal on the front side windows in Ohio. It is legal on the back side windows and rear glass. The same goes for 35% and 5% limo tint.
Ohio's rule in one line
The front driver and passenger windows must let at least 50% of light through. Everything behind the driver can be any darkness, as long as the car has side mirrors on both sides.
| Shade | Front side windows | Back windows and rear glass |
|---|---|---|
| 50% and lighter | Legal | Legal |
| 35% | Not legal | Legal |
| 20% | Not legal | Legal |
| 5% (limo) | Not legal | Legal |
What about the windshield?
Only the top 5 inches can have a shade strip. The rest of the windshield must stay light, at least 70% light through. That's why we use clear ceramic film on full windshields.
Why 50% film can read darker on a meter
Police measure the glass and film together, and factory glass already blocks a little light. So we check your glass before we install and pick a front-window film that keeps the final reading within the law.
The look most people go with
Most trucks and SUVs already have dark factory glass in the back. The most common setup is 50% ceramic on the two front windows to match. You stay legal up front, and ceramic still blocks a lot of heat at that shade. Two front windows start at $160 ceramic, and we install them at your home or work.
